The Arts is an important part of learning at Laidley District State School, giving students opportunities to explore ideas, express themselves, develop new skills, and share their creativity with others.
Students from Prep to Year 6 participate in a dedicated Arts program incorporating Music, Dance, Drama, Visual Arts, and Media Arts.
Through practical, creative learning experiences, students build confidence, imagination, collaboration, and artistic skills while discovering different ways to communicate ideas and tell stories.
Our Arts Program
Students participate in regular Arts lessons throughout the year, with Music forming a core part of the program alongside learning experiences from the other Arts subjects.
🎵 Music
Students explore the elements of music through singing, playing, listening, composing, and performing.
Across the primary years, students develop their understanding of beat, rhythm, pitch, dynamics, tempo, and musical form while learning to perform individually and with others.
Students have opportunities to sing and play a range of classroom instruments, including percussion instruments, Boomwhackers, drums, and ukuleles.
💃 Dance
Students use movement to explore and communicate ideas.
They learn about the elements of dance, develop technical and expressive skills, learn and perform choreography, and create their own movement sequences.
Dance learning ranges from imaginative movement experiences in the early years to creating and performing choreography for different purposes and audiences in the upper primary years.
🎭 Drama
Drama gives students opportunities to explore characters, situations, stories, and ideas through performance.
Students develop their expressive skills through movement, voice, role-play, improvisation, and dramatic storytelling while learning how performers communicate meaning to an audience.
🎨 Visual Arts
Students experiment with materials, techniques, and visual conventions to create artworks that communicate their ideas and experiences.
They explore drawing, painting, mixed media, and other art-making processes while responding to artworks from different artists, cultures, places, and times.
🎬 Media Arts
Students explore how images, sound, text, movement, and technology can be combined to communicate stories and ideas.
They plan, create, and share media artworks while developing an understanding of how media can be designed for different audiences and purposes.
Learning Through The Arts
Arts lessons are active, practical, and creative.
Students may find themselves:
singing or playing instruments with a class ensemble
creating rhythms and musical patterns
learning and performing a dance
improvising a character or scene
experimenting with new art materials and techniques
creating choreography, compositions, artworks, or media
watching, listening to, and discussing the work of artists and performers
rehearsing and sharing their work with others
Students are encouraged to create, experiment, practise, perform, reflect, and try again as they develop their skills and artistic voice.
Performances and Opportunities
Students have opportunities to share their learning beyond the Arts classroom through performances, school events, celebrations, and community activities.
These experiences give students the chance to develop confidence, work collaboratively, and experience the excitement of creating and performing for an audience.
🎶 Choir
Our school choir provides students with an additional opportunity to develop their singing and performance skills while making music with others.
Choir students rehearse regularly and perform at selected school and community events throughout the year.

🎺 Instrumental Music
Students may also have the opportunity to participate in the Queensland Instrumental Music program.
Instrumental Music provides eligible students with specialist tuition and opportunities to develop their skills through individual, small-group, and ensemble music-making.
